Vesta Street Pump Station

Owner:  Los Angeles County Sanitation District

Project Name: Vesta Street Pump Station Upgrades

Location : Inglewood, CA

Designer:

Contractor: Orion Construction Corporation

Delivery Model: Design-Build

Contract Value: $4,489,252

Schedule: 2010

Scope: this retrofit project of the 7MGD Vesta Street wastewater pump station. Orion constructed a new wet well; installed a 7,000-gallon surge tank; installed emergency bypass piping; modified the discharge piping; coated the dry well; installed a new switchboard and 400KW emergency generator; and installed four new 75HP dry-pit pumps. The new pumps required mechanical upgrades, including new interior piping, valves, and drainage systems.

Challenges: A challenge was the small construction site and 25-foot-deep excavations. Orion had to sequence partial demolition of the pump station to construct the temporary bypass pump station. Orion phased the conversion between the temporary and upgraded pump stations so that each new pump was tested individually after being used as a temporary bypass pump, with no interruption of sewage service. The use of the new pumps in a temporary bypass condition saved the Owner significant operating costs by avoiding the need to run temporary rental bypass pumps for months.

Results: The project provided LA County Sanitation with a much-needed upgraded facility to replace the undersized system. Orion Construction worked with the owner to provide value engineering of means and methods, saving them significant time and money.
