Broadway Storm Drain Repair

Owner: City of San Diego

Location: Golden Hill, Broadway St.

Designer: Harris and Associates

Contractor: Orion Construction Corporation

Delivery Model: Design-Build

Contract Value: $3.4 million

Schedule: 2025

Scope: The Work consists of repair and reconstruction at 2650 Broadway Street, including, but not limited to, the installation of a temporary storm drain bypass during rain events, the replacement of approximately 67 LF of the existing 24-inch Reinforced Concrete Pipe (RCP), and the installation of two storm drain cleanouts. Upon completion of the work, all areas impacted were restored to pre-impact condition, including revegetation and erosion control of the excavated area.

Challenges: The project faced several challenges due to its proximity to residential buildings and its location on an arterial street. The shoring system was approximately 30 feet deep and had to account for the multistory residential building with an underground garage abutting the construction area. Additionally, the project caused significant traffic disruptions requiring coordination with the city and community to keep the public and local business owners informed. A bypass system had to be installed during construction to accommodate storm flows, since the majority of this project was carried out during the rainy season.

Results: Orion quickly collaborated with Harris and Associates and Condon Johnson to assess, design, and construct a solution for the stormwater system emergency failure and the access required to construct the repairs. The design progressed alongside construction, showcasing the team's agility.
