Owner: City of San Diego Value of Construction: $5,283,600 Completion Date: August 2011The Old Rose Canyon Trunk Sewer (ORCTS) was built in the 1957 and used to carry flows from the northern basins, pump station 64 and Miramar Naval Air Station. In 1969, the Rose Canyon Parallel Trunk Sewer was built to relieve some capacity of the Old Rose Canyon Trunk Sewer. Currently ORTCS serves flows from San Clemente Trunk Sewer and flows generated by approximately 7,000 residents and 5,000 employments along the trunk. ORCTS is approximately 2.8 miles long. The size of the pipe varies from 21 to 36 inches in diameter. The pipe material is made of Extra Strength Vitrified Clay (ESVC). The Trunk Sewer runs next to the new 60-inch Rose Canyon Trunk Sewer and the 39-inch Parallel. The majority of the pipes were constructed in 1957 for a total distance of 14,285 feet, of which 6,658 feet is 21-inch Vitrified Clay (VC), 5,726 feet is 24-inch VC, 330 feet is 27-inch VC, 694 feet VC, 410 feet VC, and 467 feet is 36-inch VC. The existing line presents an environmental danger to Rose Canyon Creek. It has ruptured more than once, which is why this improvement project is very important for the surrounding areas. The result will be creek protection from environmental damage that could result from additional breaks. The ORCTS condition is fair, however a segment between Manholes D13S15 and D13S38 was collapsed due to 2005 rising water in Rose Creek. The 312 feet long section of 24-inch VC sewer main has been repaired since then. Since a good portion of the ORCTS (Rose Creek Sewer) from MH E12S304 to MH D13S350 is located and exposed within the Rose Creek area, the Redirection approximately 3,090 feet of this trunk sewer out of the canyon area which is the main focus of the pre-design report of this project. The existing trunk sewer begins just north of the junction of I-5 and SR-52, it runs southerly along I-5 and ends at Balboa Avenue I-5 interchange where it merges to Rose Canyon Parallel Trunk Sewer (RCPTS) at manhole D13S-285. The existing pipeline was installed in 1957, and the pipeline material is Vitrified Clay Extra Strength (VCES). The total length is approximately 14,983 feet long (2.8 miles) all outside the right-of-way.
